Doong Island that is part of Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines. It is a small
inhabited island in the Don group, to the south west of Bantayan Island. It is
part of municipality of Bantayan, and holds two barangays – Doong and
Luyongbaybay. It has an elevation of 9 meters. Fishing is the primary source of livelihood in Doong as well as the whole island of Bantayan.
According to
the legend, the island is named after a big bird called Doong, which is already
extinct. It is the biggest islet of Bantayan Island.
Doong neighboring islands are Botigues, Lipayran, Hilotongan, Mambacayao Gamay
and Mamabacayao Dako.
Doong can be reached only by pump boat, either a 3-hours trip from Hagnaya, San Remigio directly to Doong or a 1 hour trip from
Bantayan mainland.
Matabawong Islet
A National Power Corporation (NaPoCor) supplies electricity to the island for 24 hours
everyday. But communicationis not easy because only few parts of the island where you can use mobiles phones.
